There are moments as a photographer that feel absolutely magical, and this Lake Ashi proposal in Hakone was one of them. On January 30, 2025, I had the honor of capturing a breathtaking surprise proposal with Mount Fuji standing tall in the background—a setting straight out of a fairytale.
A Change of Plans Turned Into Perfection
The original plan was for him to propose at the iconic Heiwa no Torii gate at Hakone Shrine, one of the most famous proposal spots in Japan. However, on that day, the Torii was unexpectedly closed to visitors. While it initially seemed like a challenge, it ended up being a blessing in disguise.
We quickly adapted and shifted to another location along Lake Ashi, and what a gift it turned out to be—Mount Fuji was clearly visible that day, standing majestically in the backdrop. Winter skies in Hakone often bring the clearest views of Fuji, and this was one of those perfect days.
The Proposal at Lake Ashi
As he led her to the lakeshore, the scenery couldn’t have been more magical: the serene waters of Lake Ashi, Hakone’s peaceful charm, and the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji glowing in the distance. With emotions high and the view unforgettable, he got down on one knee and asked the most important question of his life. Her emotional yes against this iconic Japanese landscape made for a once-in-a-lifetime memory.
Engagement Photos Around Lake Ashi & Hakone Shrine
After the proposal, we continued with a relaxed engagement photoshoot around Lake Ashi and the grounds of Hakone Shrine. The shrine’s traditional red details, towering cedar trees, and serene pathways created a beautiful contrast to the lakeside shots with Mount Fuji. This mix of natural and cultural backdrops made their gallery timeless and truly Japanese in essence.
Tips for Planning a Mount Fuji or Lake Ashi Proposal
If you’re dreaming of a proposal in Hakone, here are a few key tips from this special day:
- Have a backup location: Famous spots like Heiwa no Torii can sometimes be crowded or closed. Always have a second location planned—it may even surprise you with a better view.
- Timing is key: Winter often gives the clearest visibility of Mount Fuji, while golden hour (sunrise/sunset) offers the most romantic light.
- Dress for the season: January in Hakone is chilly—cozy layers in neutral or deep tones photograph beautifully against the crisp winter skies and snowy Fuji backdrop.
- Make it personal: Whether it’s champagne, flowers, or simply choosing a meaningful location, the thought behind the proposal makes it unforgettable.
- Work with a local photographer: Having someone who knows the area can help navigate sudden changes (like we did here!) and still create the perfect moment.
Why Lake Ashi & Mount Fuji Are Perfect for a Proposal
Few places in Japan capture romance the way Hakone and Mount Fuji do. Lake Ashi offers serene waterside views, Hakone Shrine brings traditional Japanese charm, and on clear days, Mount Fuji completes the picture with its breathtaking presence. Whether you’re planning a proposal, engagement session, or pre-wedding shoot, this region is one of the most unforgettable backdrops in the world.
If you’re searching for a Mount Fuji proposal photographer, Hakone engagement shoot, or Lake Ashi couple session, I’d love to help you plan and capture a moment as magical as this one.
